“Emily in Paris” Season 4 Twist REVEALED! (Possibly)
Spoilers for Emily in Paris Season 3 and (possibly) for Season 4!
I didn’t catch this on my first watch of Emily in Paris, but thanks to some brilliant people on Instagram, they showed me what the upcoming twist is going to be, and I am fully on board. Sometimes when I make predictions, is just for fun, things I don’t think will ever really happen in the show. Sometimes they’re what I think should happen but I know won’t. But this one? This, I think, is going to happen in Season 4, and it it is BIG.
As a latecomer to Emily in Paris, having watched all three seasons only after the third dropped, I wasn’t very well immersed in the world or the fan culture, let alone any of the theories. Honestly, I kind of turned up my nose at Emily in Paris before giving it a go. Some said they didn’t like Emily or thought the show wasn’t good. I ended up really liking Emily, despite some issues, and the show is exactly what it sets out to be, which is how I define good (though I think that falters a bit in Season 3 where it moves too much into cliche soap opera territory and away from what made the first two seasons so strong, but I digress). In any case, I fell in love. With the Paris aesthetic, with the fashion and culture that put me right back as a sixteen year old American girl who had less than sophisticated ideas of Parisian culture…It was a dream come true. I fell in love with Gabriel, too, but that’s a post for another day.
As Season 3 started to wrap up, it became extremely clear to me that Camille was pregnant. Gabriel staring longingly at children meant that the plot twist was either that he was a pedophile or he was going to be a father. I assumed the latter. And I knew he and Camille weren’t going to go through with the wedding, though I wasn’t sure how that would happen. Then, when the end of Season 3 played out exactly like I expected, I think it made me complacent. I wasn’t looking for any other clues because I didn’t think there were any others to be had, and honestly, that impressed me from a writing perspective. Because I think the next big twist is staring us directly in the face, and a lot of us, including me, had no idea.
Camille isn’t really pregnant.
My mind was blown when I saw this idea, but it immediately made sense. All the pieces clicked together, because it’s all coming from her mother. Camille is obviously under a lot of pressure, stressed and confused about what she wants. Her affair with the Greek artist — while being just plain bad writing — shows that she is in crisis mode and is not fully committed to Gabriel. But her mother keeps repeating that Camille needs to stick to their plan. Obviously back in Season 2, it seemed like that plan was just to break the “No Gabriel” pact with Emily and for Camille to go after him herself. Now, I think it’s become clear that that was only step one, and the plan was really in the next steps where she tells Gabriel she’s pregnant. Of course, Gabriel being who he is, immediately wanted to marry Camille and is clearly excited about being a father. It all fell into place, except it doesn’t seem that it’s what Camille really wants. As she says at the altar, she really just wanted to win.
What else seems to show that Camille isn’t actually pregnant is the strange behavior of her mother. She invites the priest (weird already) and pushes like crazy for Gabriel and Camille to marry immediately. Of course, that could be about the baby, but it feels more than that. Especially when, as Camille is really melting down, her mother reminds her just to stick to the plan. It also solves the somewhat sticky problem of exactly what they were going to do with the next season as Gabriel becomes a father and tries to co-parent with Camille when they aren’t together. Unfortunately, it also pretty well demonizes Camille, which they already started to do in S3, and I think she deserved better than being reduced to that role. But here we are anyway.
With all the evidence, and the love Emily in Paris has for big twists, I think this will be one of the first big reveals of Season 4, and I can only imagine the drama it will bring. I for one can’t wait to see it!
