What We Might See from Kate and Anthony in Bridgerton Season 3

SPOILERS! For S2 and a bit for When He Was Wicked

Bridgerton Season 2 has barely aired, but as is the way of things, people are already looking toward season 3 and even season 4, as Netflix has renewed the hit show through then. With a smash of an opening weekend, the biggest ever for an English Language show, there’s a good chance we’ll be getting a lot more Bridgerton for a long time to come. And I couldn’t be more pleased.

But especially after Season 2 departed dramatically and significantly from the source material (not a vice, I might add), people are wondering what is in store for the coming seasons more than ever. In an interview with E! News, Simone Ashley gave us the best present since the season itself and told us a bit of what to expect next season.

Yes, there will be a post-marriage Kanthony storyline for sure. And I’m super excited for the world to see Nicola [Coughlan] and Luke [Newton] rock it, but also to just play with the Anthony and Kate story now that they’re loved up and they’ve kind of sorted themselves out.

So Season 3 seems like it’s going to be big, and the indication that it might have a Penelope and Colin as the main couple is a major one I’m going to have to do a lot of writing about in the coming days. But at this moment, I want to focus on what is coming for Kate and Anthony who, it seems, won’t be just seen in glimpses but will have a full storyline, and I can’t wait to see it.

Here’s my pitch: I want Kate and Anthony to have an infertility storyline. OK, hear me out, because obviously we all want them to just ride off into the sunset and make babies and be perfect. But I want to give these two amazing actors something really powerful to do, something that can dig deeper into the themes established in Season 2.

First off, Bridgerton doesn't seem at all fearful of drawing plots from future books, and in Francesca's book, infertility is a large part of the story, but depending on how fast they move through the sibling stories, we may or may not get to see that. Moreover, the pressure to have children for a couple with a title is immense, so that story would work very well with the Viscount and Viscountess Bridgerton. It would lend itself to discussions of why people should have children and the pressures especially women face to have them. Even nowadays. And Bridgerton is at its best when it's secretly talking about today under all that Regency finery. It could be a great final step for Anthony to view his family as a family and no longer in any aspect as duty, especially as talking about children was one of his big interview questions for all the ladies he was considering to be viscountess.

It could further underline the gender politics and points set up in Season 2 as well, as Kate and Anthony settle into very traditional roles of husband and wife, father and mother, and see what fits and what doesn’t, what works for them and what won’t. It could provide some very, very powerful moments for both Kate and Anthony as they struggle with fear, guilt, and duty, as they learn to lean on each other. It would further underline for these two control freaks the way life and love cannot be controlled, and help them get ready to be the best parents they can for their children. It would also be a pretty strong story reason to put in another sex scene or two from these amazing characters with such sensational chemistry (give the people what they want, and all the better if it works for the content and theme of the story). And it could provide yet another massively meaningful emotional catharsis for these two, as well as give us an amazing happy ending yet again.
